Regions & Representatives
TXGA divides Texas into six regions along county lines. Each region elects a representative from its own members who hosts events and CITOs, works with local and county parks, and can help when a cache listing is having trouble getting published.
Central Texas
Centered around Austin and the Texas Hill Country, Central Texas is a geocacher’s paradise of limestone bluffs, river crossings, wildflower fields, and quirky Austin-area hides. The region has a notably welcoming and laid-back geocaching culture (as one team captain famously put it, the two rules are “be reasonably safe and have fun”), and the terrain offers everything from easy roadside grabs to challenging multi-caches through rugged hill country.
East Texas
The Piney Woods of East Texas offer some of the most scenic and varied geocaching in the state, with dense forest trails, beautiful lakes like Caddo Lake, and numerous state parks that participate in Texas State Parks’ geocaching passport programs. This region rewards hikers and nature lovers with traditional caches tucked into genuinely wild terrain, a refreshing contrast to the urban hides found elsewhere.
North Texas
Home to the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex and surrounding suburbs, North Texas offers an enormous density of urban and suburban caches, from clever lamp-skirt hides in sprawling parking lots to more rewarding nature trail finds along the region’s many lakes and green belts. It’s a great region for power-caching runs and has a famously competitive team; they’ve taken home the coveted Golden Ammo Can at the TXGA Texas Challenge more than once.
South Texas
Stretching toward the Rio Grande and the Gulf Coast, South Texas blends ranch land, brushy chaparral, and border culture into a unique geocaching backdrop. Cache density can be sparse in rural areas, making finds feel more rewarding, while cities like San Antonio and Corpus Christi offer solid urban caching with plenty of historical and cultural flair baked into cache listings.
Southeast Texas
Anchored by the massive Houston metro area, Southeast Texas is one of the most cache-rich regions in the state, with options ranging from bayou trail hides and petrochemical corridor micros to beachy Galveston Island finds. The Southeast team is known for being highly competitive and strategic at the annual TXGA Challenge, often showing up in matching team gear ready to dominate.
West Texas
Vast, remote, and jaw-droppingly beautiful, West Texas is the region for geocachers who crave adventure off the beaten path. From the Guadalupe Mountains and Big Bend to the high desert plains around Marfa and Midland, caches here are fewer but far more memorable, often requiring serious hiking and navigation. The region’s wide-open spaces and dramatic landscapes make every find feel like a genuine expedition.
