Texas 2-Step County Challenge

Two caches in every one of Texas's 254 counties: a Traditional and one other type. Born at a TXGA board meeting in 2022, it takes the county challenge and doubles it.

How it works

  1. Find two caches in all 254 counties. In each county, one must be a Traditional and the other any other type except an event or an Adventure Lab.
  2. Track your progress. The progress checker shows which counties still need which cache type. When you think you are done, run the challenge checker.
  3. Sign the log. The container is at the posted coordinates. You can sign it any time and post a note to hold your finisher number, then log the find once you qualify.

What doesn't count

A cache whose final location is in a different county from its posted coordinates does not count. The checker already leaves out the known ones, and there is a list of ineligible caches. Caches found before August 17, 2024 are grandfathered.

Finds are audited. Any cache with a physical log must have your signature in it, and a photo of the log settles any question.

How it started

In spring 2022 the TXGA board asked whether Texas could support a second, harder county challenge. More than 60 counties needed a cache of some type other than a Traditional, so board members and a few willing Texas cachers spent the next year placing caches to fill them. TXGA announced the challenge at Roundup 2023, with prizes for the first ten finishers and a celebration event where they revealed the final location.

The first ten

Trinity67 and new.neo finished together in March 2024. More than 55 cachers have finished since. The cache listing keeps the full list, updated quarterly.

The Texas County Challenge needs one cache per county, and many of the finds you log for it give you a head start here.
